Feature

The invoice comes out of the checked quantities

XRechnung and ZUGFeRD are the end of the chain, not its beginning. Levora produces them from the same items that were approved earlier – with no detour through Excel.

Plainly

Producing an XRechnung is not the hard part

We say this up front because it is true: there are one-off tools for it, there are invoicing programs for under 15 euros a month, and for invoices to the federal government there is a free portal. If all you need is a file format, you do not need construction software for it.

The hard part is different: that the quantities in that file are right, that they belong to the correct item in the correct contract, and that when someone asks you can show where each number came from. An invoicing program does not cover that path – it ends in your folder.

What Levora takes on

From the approved quantity to a file ready to send

  1. 1Quantities are already checked

Levora – confirmed Aufmaß quantities as the basis of the invoice

What goes into the invoice was confirmed at the Aufmaß stage – not entered again here.

  2. 2Items and prices are pulled

Levora – contract items with unit prices

Unit prices come from the contract’s bill of quantities, not from a price list beside it.

  3. 3The Leitweg-ID is checked

Levora – Leitweg-ID stored per client

Structure and check digit are verified before the file leaves your machine.

  4. 4Output as XRechnung or ZUGFeRD

Levora – an issued invoice in the preview, with the XRechnung XML and the PDF ready to download

Whichever the client requires – same data, two forms.

Leitweg-ID

The most common reason an invoice comes back

The Leitweg-ID routes the invoice inside the administration. It consists of a coarse address of 2 to 12 digits, an optional fine address of up to 30 characters and a two-digit check digit under Modulo 97-10 – the same method that protects an IBAN. In the XRechnung it sits in field BT-10.

If the check digit does not match, the portal rejects the invoice before a human ever sees it. That is why Levora checks it when the client is created, not when the invoice is sent.

You can test an ID right now with our free tool.

Honestly

What this feature is not

  • Not a differentiator. Plenty of programs produce the format – the path to it is the difference
  • Not bookkeeping. Levora issues the invoice; the accounts stay with your tax adviser
  • Not tax advice. For your own deadline, ask your adviser
  • Not a substitute for the client’s own checking

Common questions

Questions about invoicing

Which XRechnung version does Levora produce?

XRechnung 3.0.2 is the version in force (as of August 2026). Version 4.0 implements the revised EN 16931-1:2026 standard and is announced for mid to late 2026, with a transition period for 3.0.2 – so there will be no single cut-off day. Levora follows once 4.0 becomes binding.

How do we know the file really is compliant?

Because it is verified, and not by us. Every build runs against the KoSIT validator for EN 16931, and the ZUGFeRD invoice additionally against veraPDF for PDF/A-3B. If either check fails, there is no new release.

XRechnung or ZUGFeRD – which should we use?

Whichever the client requires. Public clients generally work with XRechnung; in B2B, ZUGFeRD is more common because a readable PDF comes with it. Levora produces both from the same data.

Does the obligation apply to us as a Kleinunternehmer?

Not for issuing: businesses under § 19 UStG are permanently exempt from having to issue e-invoices. They are not exempt from receiving them – every business based in Germany has had to be able to accept an e-invoice and file it in a GoBD-compliant way since 01.01.2025, yours included. The €800,000 thresholds for 2027 and 2028 therefore do not concern you at all. As of August 2026; whether § 19 applies to your business is for your tax adviser to say.

Can we send attachments with it?

Yes. For the evidence that is often the decisive part: the Zettel a quantity came from can be attached to the invoice.
