Industry software for rules that no standard product knows

When several firms in an industry have the same problem and the market offers no solution, we develop it. With the regulations, formats and documents of that industry as the starting point.

What it is about

What industry software is

Industry software is software for the rules, data formats and records of a particular industry. It differs from general business software in that it already knows the technical terms, regulations and documents of that industry and does not have to be adapted first.

dev2soft develops industry software for industries that the large vendors do not serve: too specialised for a standard product, too important for a spreadsheet.

levora
Levora – items of a bill of quantities with quantities and unit prices

Our example

What we had to learn for road and civil engineering

Levora is our own industry software. These four things were in no requirements specification; they are in standards, contract terms and on the foremen’s tickets.

The industry's data format

Bills of quantities arrive as GAEB DA XML. Levora reads phases X81 and X83, returns the bid as X84 and keeps the item numbers of the contract.

About the GAEB import

The industry's calculation rules

Quantities are calculated to REB 23.003, a catalogue of formulas from the Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen, the Federal Highway Research Institute.

About measurement to REB

The industry's documents

On site, things are written and signed on paper. Levora does not abolish the ticket, it reads it.

About ticket recognition

The industry's obligations

Public clients demand XRechnung invoices with a Leitweg-ID to EN 16931.

Approach

How we get to know an industry

  1. 1Read the regulations and formats

Standards, contract terms, format specifications. In the original, not in a summary.

  2. 2Collect real documents

Forms, files and exceptions from several firms. What is on the paper decides, not what is in the textbook.

  3. 3Build the smallest useful slice

One process, complete, in use at two or three firms.

  4. 4Extend it with the firms

What comes next is decided by the users’ work, not by a feature list.

Common questions

Industry software: what is asked in advance

Which industries does dev2soft develop software for?

We started with road and civil engineering; our product Levora exists for that. Enquiries from other industries are expressly welcome. What matters is not the industry, but whether there are clear rules, recurring documents and a process that runs by hand today.

Can several firms make an enquiry together?

Yes. For industry software that is even the better start: documents from several firms show early on what applies generally and what is the peculiarity of a single business.

How do you find out what an industry needs?

We read the regulations in the original and work with real documents from the firms. That is how we did it with Levora: the REB 23.003 catalogue of formulas and the Leitweg-ID specification were read and recalculated, not taken over second-hand.

How long does it take until industry software is ready to use?

That depends on the scope of the first slice. We start with a single process that works completely and extend from there.

Do you also operate the software?

Yes. We operate our own product ourselves, in Germany and with a data processing agreement. How an industry solution is operated is something we define with the clients in the quote.

Your industry has a problem that nobody solves?

Describe it to us. If you have documents on it, all the better.
